Toe Side

When I was 18 I had a really hot boyfriend who took me to the snow for the first time in my life and taught me how to Snowboard. He was my introduction and inspiration into all things Winter Wonderful. Although our relationship couldn't weather the storm, a love for frozen water falling from the sky did.

Similar to skateboarding, which I had been doing since the age of 7, I felt comfortable balancing on a board on top of white powdery snow decked out in goggles, beanies and snow apparel. When the cold snuck in and a few F-bombs slipped out, there were encouraging warm kisses when all else failed. I loved the challenge, the work out, the laughter, and the chill in the air that brought out rosy cheeks. Although I acquainted my backside with the Bunny Hill more times than I'd like to remember, and couldn't get off the lift without falling for at least 1/2 the day, I finally got the hang of it and even went down the "big hill" once. I was hooked. I don't think he & I ever went more than twice together, but the love for speeding down snowy hills stayed with me and when I moved to NY I wanted to continue boarding.

The only problem was I couldn't ride Toe Side. Heel Side was easy, but Toe Side just pissed me off and scared me to the core. Unlike skateboarding, where there are wheels separating you from the ground, the board rides directly on the hill, your feet are locked permanently in place, and if you catch an edge the chance of knocking all your teeth out, getting a concussion, or breaking a limb is highly likely. Instead I did what most beginners do, I rode like a floating leaf down the hill every time. For 5 yrs.

This year I am determined to do it the right way. I may ride "Goofy" (because there's really nothing "Regular" about me) but I can at least learn to do so properly! With "mind over matter" determination, I bought a 3 pack for lessons, rentals, and round trip bus up to Hunter Mountain this Season and my AMAZING friend Karine (a skier) did the same.

Toes ready, we took on the Mountain and had a blast!

The day was beautiful. The sun was out, the air was cold but not too cold, wind came in spurts, and our instructor was easy on the eyes. I even met a guy at the lodge who not only got my number, but put it to use 2 days later! :)
Karine ski's but decided to try out Snowboarding. We did a lesson together (me working strictly on toes) and then headed for the oh-so-familiar Bunny Hill. I rode and rode and rode.....and conquered TOE SIDE!!!!!!

I was so proud. Not only that, I did it WITHOUT cursing down the mountain. A rare feat I assure you. Usually, I only swear on special occasions, but strap a board to my feet and you may want to get ear plugs. I practised over and over again, and it came easier and easier each time. I'm no pro of course, and still need lots of practice, but it was a huge accomplishment and I can't wait to go again in a couple weeks!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!!

I didn't understand any of that.

But I still think you're amazing. ;)

I wish I'd gone with you - toe side scares the CRAP out of me.
