Ride Hard, Fall Harder

West Coast Tour 2009: Day One

2 years ago I did a West Coast Tour before moving to Mexico for 3 months. The opportunity arose for me to do it again this year, so I'm hitting up UT, OR, and CA over the next 2 weeks.

It has become tradition that when I visit my best friend, Phillip, my ass is on the line. By this I mean that we are always off on some adventure that is sure to rush the adrenaline and bruise my backside.

Last time, it was Cliff Jumping. This trip it was snowboarding at The Cannons. You may remember my previous boarding goals this season from this blog.

We rode all day and it was gorgeous. Not a cloud or a breeze. In fact it was pretty hot and we ended up stripping down to just snow pants and goggles. Britt & I rode easy while Phillip and his friend took on the rest of the mountain. My first few rides were rough while adjusting to the mountain. I'd basically just break stop down the hill which frustrated me to no end. Luckily, after lunch, we found a great run and Phillip, Britt and I all went down together. It was AWESOME. An easier trail than most, but perfect for practicing our sides.
Britt & I were doing really well, feeling pretty confident, and had almost reached the bottom when we hit a patch of ice and went down. Hard. I landed on my tailbone, skidded sideways on my wrist and then bounced backward. A foot behind me, following a skid trail in the snow, lay an equally crumpled Britt. Feet from each other and throbbing in pain, we couldn't help but sit in the snow and just laugh through it (while Phillip took pictures). It hurt soooo bad. My wrist was JACKED. I sprained it, bad. Luckily, it was the end of the day so our wipe out was well timed and we turned in our boots.

4 Ibuprofen and a busted wrist later, a wrist brace and cold/hot packs were needed. A quick trip to Wal-Mart turned highly entertaining when Britt needed an opinion on rolls.
Turning to ask Phillip she said, "Hey, Phillip-ino! Are these ok?"
As he went to respond, a store employee we hadn't noticed between us also tried to respond but could only muster a quizzical mis-understanding look on her face.
She was Filipino.
Of all the things Britt could call Phillip and of all the people around who could have responded. It was priceless.

To soothe our tired abs, we decided to eat out at the most delicious burger joint I've yet to discover: Crown Burgers. Holy YUM. I might need to go there again before I leave.

Ok, I'll say it....Utah's not so bad. :)
