Last week, as a recovery gift to myself and a get-well-soon-send-off to roomie Lindsey for the same surgery, we went to see Joshua Radin in concert. Neither of us knew much about him but had each heard him in passing and liked him and, since we both have a love for live shows and music, we decided we'd see him while he was performing here. Best decision of the week right there. Turns out he has worked with some of my other favorite Acoustic / Indie artists (like Ingrid Michaelson and Patty Griffin) and even invited Rosi Golan on stage for a duet, who is one of my favorite local artists as well. It was a good night.
Six years ago Josh wrote his first song (Winter) in the East Village (on East 3rd between A & B if you were curious--it's in the details people!) and now he's doing world wide tours (the day after this show he left for Dubai!) and appearing on The Ellen Show (twice) to perform Today (one of my faves) which Ellen and Portia used as their wedding song. It just goes to show you never know what life has in store for you.... and life sure has a lot in store for him!
Side Note: Watch Ellen & Portia's wedding video: here. It's one of the most beautiful snippets of deep love I've ever seen. My goal in life is to love that strongly and be that loved in return. They are a inspiration.
Anyways, I love Joshua Radin's music. I'm pretty sure I fell a little bit in love with him at this show, too. I kind of wanted to follow him around and gawk like a giddy school girl after the show, which really isn't like me. He's just so raw and honest, and has an optimistic but real outlook on life and love and heartbreak and heart-unbreak. He was funny, encouraging, relatable and so talented! He also loves children so he told a lot of stories about kids and friends who are married with kids, and since that's all right up my alley I was highly entertained by all of it!
While on tour, Josh is participating in a project called Little Kids Rock which allows him to visit schools in each city he tours and spend the day with the music students teaching them some of his songs and just boosting them up about their talents and the arts in general. Here in the City, he spent a day in the Bronx and had such a good time with the students that he invited three of them to the show to perform with him Live on stage! The crowd went wild and the girls (probably in 7th or 8th grade) did great! I loved it, and certainly felt a bit aflutter afterward.
Here are a couple faves for ya:
